The United Nations gathered 20 experts to investigate the ways in which blockchain can impact global economics. This panel of 20 experts was initiated by The United Nations’Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The experts are important figures from essential sectors such as industry and academia, and they will examine digital technologies, but the main focus will definitely be the blockchain technology.
The new panel is called High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation
Executive Director and co-chair of the UN secretariat Ambassador Amandeep Gill, addressed the new board which is called the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation.
“You cannot look at ‘web 3.0’ without looking at blockchain or without looking at AI (Artificial Intelligence) […] our hope is that through discussion of these various digital domains […] in terms of human rights, regarding privacy, regarding subversion of democracy, we can come out with some universal principles…of strengthening cooperation across borders,” he said.
We also found out a while ago that Melinda Gates who is the founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation together with the founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma have been invited to co-chair this new panel.
Reports claim that Ma has been selected for this due to his previous work with blockchain and this obviously includes his ability to raise $14 billion for development projects.
Humanitarian programs using the blockchain
Guterres said that these new digital technologies affect society enormously and Ma stated that “the impact of blockchain on the future of humans may be far beyond our imagination.”
The UN implemented more humanitarian programs with blockchain for more years now, but it admitted that there’s room for more.
There are currently 25.4 million refugees in the whole world and 3.1 million asylum seekers, reports the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Blockchain-based solutions are trying really hard to make a difference and improve the quality of life for individuals at community and national levels.
